Privacy Commissioner issues warning
over reusing passwords

With the increase in data security breaches over the past few months, The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is reminding businesses of the role they should take in preventing these breaches and protecting customers’ and employees’ data. This includes requiring employees to change their work passwords on a regular basis.

The 2017 federal budget passed: what are the key takeaways for employers?

The Budget Implementation Act, 2017 received royal assent in June, ushering in several amendments to the Income Tax Act, Employment Insurance Act and Canada Labour Code. A few of these changes include:

  • Allowing the distribution of T4s electronically to employees without first having to obtain their consent (if certain provisions have been met)
  • Increasing the maximum length of unpaid parental leave allowed from 37 weeks to 63 weeks
  • Extending the period for when a maternity leave may begin from 11 weeks before the estimated date of birth to 13 weeks
  • A new EI benefit for family members who take time off work to care for a critically ill adult
